Kim Hyun Joong wins lawsuit, "Please" ditches "harmful to youth" rating

SEOUL: Korean singer Kim Hyun Joong's song "Please" is no longer stuck with the rating "harmful to youth", after his management agency Key East Entertainment won a lawsuit against Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF), reported Korean media.

The MOGEF had earlier found Kim's song objectionable for having lyrics that contain references to drinking and smoking, and had rated the song, from Kim's first solo album "Breakdown", as "harmful to youth".

However, the Seoul Administrative Court ruled on Friday in favour of Key East Entertainment, which had previously described MOGEF's decision to label the song "harmful to youth" as "unjust", and ordered MOGEF to withdraw the rating.

The courts said such themes are often used in songs targeted at youth to express sorrow after a breakup.

It further noted that "such themes are allowed in order to safeguard creativity in the music industry".

"The presence of such themes in a song does not necessarily mean that there is any endorsement of drinking and smoking involved."

Kim is just one of the many K-pop acts that have had their songs labelled "harmful to youth" by MOGEF, which had also wagged its finger at songs from boy bands BEAST as well as 2PM.
